Yamaha Passing Lamps

This may help if you have Yamaha Passing Lamp bar #STR-5BN35-40-00 or STR-5KS35-40-00 - for applications with and without a windshield. The only real difference in the two versions is in the length of the spacers between the bar racket and the fork brace.

First of all, don't try to do this with the new passing Lamp bar on the bike! You asked what holds the turn signals on... If you have one of the two part numbers shown above, you will just need to reuse the stock fastening bolts that came with the stock signals. You will know this because the bottom of the left and right hand turn signal adapter is just about the same size as the expansion sleeve on each turn signal.

HARDWARE ASSEMBLY

Follow this sequence as it will give you the assembly order of the hardware. You are not wiring this thing yet, just hand tightening everything. If you look at the dopey drawing that came with your light bar, you will notice the orange wire that comes from the right hand bulb (your left as you look at the illustration). It threads down through the hollow bolt which on most kits just has a hex shaped hole in it for an Allen key. The hollow bolt is inserted down through the base of the right hand lamp bracket (the one without the switch).

You will notice that the base of the lamp in concave to accept the raised end of one of the cone shaped spacers that came with the kit. slide that spacer on next. *** DO NOT FOLLOW A SUGGESTION THAT YOU MAY HAVE READ ON A FORUM THAT SUGGESTS REPLACING THE CONE WASHERS WITH ONE OR TWO STAR WASHERS, UNLESS OF COURSE YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR LAMPS POINTING UP IN THE AIR, WITH NOTHING BUT A LEFT-RIGHT ADJUSTMENT.

Next, insert the end of the hollow bolt through the hole on the end of the lamp bar. Make sure you have the correct end! The center bracket on the bar will be to the rear and pointed up.

Next slide on a second cone shaped spacer with the cone facing down this time. The last piece to screw on is the turn signal adaptor. The hollow bolt threads into and mates with the concave depression in it.

Everything can be tightened a bit now after you position the slotted portion of the turnsignal adapter to the rear.

Do the same things to the left side Lamp assembly (the one with the switch).

Here is the part where you may get mad. If you bought the kit from Tony -O at Yamaha Sports Center, they will have welded a 12mm. meteric hex nut to the top of the hollow bolt. If you do not have this arrangement I'm sorry to say that you can't wire the bar and lamps until you bolt everything to the bike and point all of the lamps in the general direction that you want them to shine.

WIRING THE LAMPS AND ATTACHING THE TURN SIGNALS

The Red wire that is provided is spliced into which ever wire that will be providing power (green, yellow, or blue) to the passing lamps. This is then run to the left side passing lamp (the one with the switch). From there the Orange wire that is provided runs from that lamp to the right lamp to give it power. The only other wires you have to feed through the tubes are for the turn signals.

The Yellow wire is the high beam positive wire. If you want the passing lamps to just be on when the high beams are on then you splice into the Yellow wire.

The Green wire is the low beam positive. If you want the passing lamps to just be on when the low beams are on then you splice into the Green wire.

If you want the passing lamps to be on regardless of which setting you have the headlight on then you need to spice into The Blue wire. So depending on how you want your passing lamps to run will dictate which wire you tap into. Remember you can always turn them off with the switch.

Follow the installation instructions that came with your kit to pull the wires then make your connection choice. I would suggest that you use some sealer in the base of each passing lamp as indicated in the earlier posts to this thread. In addition either use heat shrink tubing or thinly wrapped black electrical tape over the portion of the wires that exit the slot just ABOVE the tension bolt on the turn signal sleeves. You may need to spread the sleeve slightly with a flat bladed screwdriver to get it on to the end of the signal adapter as it is a very tight fit. in addition, the slot on the lamp sleeve and the slot on the adapter must align to the rear of the unit.

Hope that some of this babbeling helps..
